Generic name: Cyproheptadine

What is generic Periactin?

Generic Periactin or cyproheptadine is an anti-allergic preparation used for the relief of allergy manifestations like rhinorrhea, itching, skin rash, irritation of the nose and eyes, redness of the eyes. Cyproheptadine oral may also be helpful in cold and flu symptoms.  Periactin is sometimes prescribed to stimulate appetite in insufficient body weight. Anti-serotonin properties allows Periactin be efficient in migraines

How does Periactin work?

Periactin belongs to a class of anti allergic preparations called antihistamines or H1 histamine receptors blockers. Antihistamine effects of Periactin are caused by the blockage of histamine receptors. By blocking these receptors Periactin prevents the action of histamine and relive the most common allergy symptoms. Cyproheptadine oral also possesses anti serotonin effects. Moreover, cyproheptadine oral exerts antipruritic, antiexudative, anticholinergic effects.

How Periactin is taken?

Periactin is available in the form of tablets 4mg. Before taking Periactin we recommend you to visit your local healthcare provider. You doctor may prescribe the dosage of cyproheptadine oral that based on your general health condition, age and weight, concomitant therapy. Usually the recommended daily dose is 12mg daily ( 1 tablet 4mg 3 times daily). For the treatment of chronic hives the daily dosage is 6mg daily. Maximal daily dose is 32mg. Do not take cyproheptadine in children without consultations with your health care provider. Therapy with cyptoheptadine oral in children should be carried only under healthcare provider supervision.  Periactin can be taken with or without food. However, it is better to take cyproheptadine with food to eliminate possible upset stomach symptoms.

Periactin precaution and warning!

Before taking Periactin you should consult your local health care provider. Let your doctor know if you have ever experienced:

·         Vision problems like glaucoma

·         Stomach diseases like ulcers and gastritis

·         Diseases of the prostate gland

·         Gall bladder problems

·         High blood pressure (hypertension)

·         Bronchial asthma

Cyproheptadine oral should not be used in pregnancy and breastfeeding. Cyproheptadine oral is a pregnancy category B meaning that is probably safe to use it if you are pregnant. However, insufficient clinical investigations require you to avoid taking this medicine during pregnancy.

Periactin should be taken with caution in children and elderly patients.

Do not drive or operate any machinery while the treatment with cyproheptadine oral.

Periactin side effects

Periactin is usually well tolerated and does not cause any significant side effects. Periactin side effects usually are common for people with hypersensitivity or allergy to any of the drug ingredients. These not severe cyproheptadine side effects include: dry mouth, skin allergic reactions, problems with urination, headache, dizziness and drowsiness, upset stomach.

In very rare cases some patients may experience breathing disorders, problems with swallowing, swelling of tongue and lips. If you noticed any of these Periactin side effects consult your doctor immediately.

Periactin interactions

Before taking cyproheptadine let your doctor know what medicines you are currently taking. Cyproheptadine may interact with caffeine and phenamine that lower the action of Periactin.

Do not take the medicines with MAO inhibitors and tricyclic antidepressants.

Periactin increases the effects of certain opiod painkillers and sedatives.
