What is Mebendazole?

Mebendazole otc is an antihelminthic drugs with a broad spectrum of action. Mebendazole is a highly effective remedy used for enterobiasis and trichocephalosis treatment. It can slo also be used for the treatment of ascariasis, hookworm disease, strongyloidiasis teniasis, mixed infestations caused by infection of these helminths. Mebendazole is manufactured by Cipla under the name Mebex.

How does Mebendazole work?
Mebendazole - a highly effective antihelminthic agent with a broad spectrum of antibacterial action. Mebendazole is highly effective against enterobiasis and trichocephalosis. Action mechanism is associated with supression the formation of cellular tubulin in worms. Thus, it disturbs the function of the cytoplasmic microtubules, glucose utilization and inhibits the formation of ATP.

Pharmacokinetics:
After oral administration Mebendazole is absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. It possesses a low bioavailability due to high primary metabolism and very low solubility. Bioavailability is increased when Mebendazole is taken with food, especially fat food. The maximum concentration (Cmax) in plasma is achieved in 2-5 hours. It binds to plasma proteins by 90-95% and it is accumulated in the liver, adipose tissue, the larval cysts. It passes through the placenta, partially metabolized in the liver. The half-life (T1/2) - 2.5-5.5 hours. Almost entirely (90%) is excreted in the feces.

Indications:
Mebendazole otc is prescribed in the following conditions:

· Enterobiasis

· Ascariasis

· Hookworm disease

· Strongyloidiasis

· Whipworm infection (trichuriasis)

· Trichinosis

· Teniasis

· Echinococcosis

· Mixed helminth infections.

Contraindications

Mebex (Mebendazole otc) is contraindicated in:

· Severe liver diseases (hepatic failure)

· Hypersensitivity to mebendazole

· Children under 2 years

· Pregnancy

· Breastfeeding

Pregnancy and breastfeeding:

Mebendazole is stricly contraindicated for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding. The use of mebendazole during first trimester of pregnancy may cause damages to the fetus. Mebendazole passes through the breastmilk therefore the use of Mebendazole in nursing mothers should be avoided.

Mebendazole Side effects:

From the gastrointestinal tract, liver: a case of massive infestation and rapid removal of worms sometimes observed transient abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting. Occasionally, when using high doses of mebendazole for a long time for the treatment of echinococcosis, there have been cases of reversible liver dysfunction, elevated liver enzymes or the development of hepatitis.
CNS: headache.
Blood system: the long-term treatment of echinococcosis with mebendazole at high doses sometimes observed neutropenia. There may be anemia, eosinophilia.
Allergic reactions: skin rash, urticaria, angioedema.
Other: Hair loss, hematuria, cylindruria.

Special instructions and safety precautions:
During treatment, the need to observe good personal hygiene to avoid re-infection or transmission and the simultaneous treatment of all family members.
With prolonged use is necessary to control peripheral blood picture, liver and kidney function.
It should avoid the simultaneous use of lipophilic substances with mebendazole.
Within days after taking mebendazole avoid drinking alcohol.
In the application of mebendazole do not need to diet.
After receiving mebendazole do not prescribe a laxative.
With care given to children. Children under the age of 1 year Mebendazole should be used only if the invasion of morbidity has a major negative impact on nutrition and physical development.

Drug Interactions:
Mebendazole otc reduces the need for insulin in patients with diabetes mellitus.
Joint appointment with cimetidine may lead to intensification of the effect of mebendazole by inhibiting its hepatic metabolism and increase plasma concentrations.
