What is Mupirocin ointment? 

Bactroban is a broad-spectrum antibiotic for topical and local application. Mupirocin is produced by the microorganism Pseudomonas fluorescens. 
Mupirocin exerts its therapeutic action by inhibiting protein synthesis in the bacterial cell through reversible binding to isoleucyl-tRNA synthetase. In therapeutic concentrations, mupirocin exerts bacteriostatic action, in high concentrations - bactericidal action. Mupirocin 2% ointment is active against Gram-positive aerobic microorganisms: Staphylococcus aureus (including strains resistant to methicillin and β-lactamase producing), Staphylococcus epidermidis, other coagulase types of Staphylococcus and Gram-negative anaerobic bacteria: Haemophilus influenzae,Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Neisseria meningitidis, Branhamella catarrhalis, Pasteurella multocida, Proteus mirabilis, Proteus vulgaris, Enterobacter cloacae, Enterobacter aerogenes, Citrobacter freundii, Bordetella pertussis. 

What is Mupirocin ointment 2% used for? 

· Treatment of primary skin infections: impetigo, folliculitis, furunculosis (including furunculosis of the external auditory canal), ecthyma;  

· Treatment of secondary skin infections: infected eczema, infected injuries (abrasions, insect bites), minor (not requiring hospitalization) wounds and burns;  

· Prevention of bacterial lesions and small wounds as well as prevention of infectious complications of minor abrasions, cuts and wounds. 

How is Mupirocin 2% ointment is applied? 

Bactroban ointment is applied 2-3 times on the affected area. A small amount of mupirocin ointment is applied on the affected area and is rubbed gently. In necessary, coating bandage can be used. The duration of treatment is 10 days depending on the severity of the disease. If the infection persist make sure to contact your health care provider. 

When Mupirocin is contraindicated? 

Bactroban is contraindicated for use in patients with known hypersensitivity or allergy to Mupirocin. Make sure to inform your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Do to apply Mupirocin 2% ointment on on infections caused by viruses and fungi. Do not apply bactroban ointment on mucous linings of the nasal cavity, mouth cavity, eyes. 

Which Mupirocin side effects are possible during the treatment? 

Mupirocin may cause the following side effects: Less than 1%: erythema, dryness, swelling, contact dermatitis.

Rare: allergic skin reactions at the site of application - edema, rash.

In isolated cases: systemic allergic reaction.
Bactroban is usually well tolerated. 

How Bactroban can interact with other medicines? 

Mupirocin ointment should not be combined with the following topical medications: ·  

  • Local anesthetics         
  • Local antibiotics        
  • Local corticosteroids        
  • Local antivirals        
  • Local antifungals
