Zymaxid contains the active ingredient gatifloxacin that belongs to a group of fluoroquinolone antibiotics. Like other fluoroquinolone antibiotics Gatifloxacin works by inhibiting the enzyme DNA-gyrase. This enzyme is necessary for repairing and synthesis of bacterial genetic material (DNA). Suppression of this enzyme causes lysis of the microorganism. Zymaxid ophthalmic solution is used to treat bacterial conjunctivitis caused by Haemophilus influenzae, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Streptococcus mitis, Streptococcus oralis, Streptococcus pneumonia.

Zymaxid is made by pharmaceutical company Allergan, Inc – company that specialized in producing high quality ophthalmic solution. Zymaxid is the medication with the highest dose of gatifloxacin on the US pharmaceutical market.

Zymaxid is effective against a wide variety of microorganisms including gram positive and gram negative microorganisms. Double blind clinical trials involved more than 1500 patients with bacterial conjunctivitis showed high effectiveness up to 90%

The recommended dose of Zymaxid 0.5% ophthalmic solution is 1 drop instilled in the affected eye or eyes every two hours while awake on day up to eight times, followed by one drop instilled two to four times per day in the affected eye or eyes while awake on days two through seven.

The most common Zymaxid side effects included: eye pain, redness, irritation, aggravation of conjunctivitis, dysgeusia. As with other antibacterial preparations, long-term application of gatifloxacin may lead to overgrowth of nonsusceptible microorganisms such as fungi.

Eye problems according to statical data are some of the most common problems which affect human health. In our fast-evolving society we can clearly see that amongst all the positive features a personal computer has it also inflicts damage to our eyesight and the most frequent cause of eye problems is sedentary work with a computer. When adults or children are performing certain tasks which are connected with eye stress, their eyes are fatigued, that if not alternated with eye exercise leads to certain common eye problems like:

astigmatism

myopia (short sight)

Long sight or presbyopia

conjunctivitis

So let’s start from the beginning what is astigmatism?

Astigmatism is a common pathology of eye refraction, that is connected with irregular shape of cornea and crystalline lens. As a result the affected person sees the surrounding objects deformed, degraded and straight lines as curved ones. Cornea and the lens of a healthy person is spherically shaped. When such eye problems arise the spherical shape of the lens is modified, and is curved in different directions. That is why the rays of light that pass through the lens do not focus in one point, but focus in different parts of the eye. This leads to inaccurate and deformed vision. Astigmatism is often accompanied by such eye problems as short sight or long sight. Astigmatism almost in 95% of cases is inherent. Astigmatism can be acquired due to severe eye trauma, eye surgery or rough scars on the cornea.

Short sight or Myopia on the other hand is often acquired due to overexertion of the eye. Short sight is in the group of eye problems that are connected with eye refraction it results in the focus shift from the retina to the front part of the eye(somewhere in the vitreous body). Due to short sight the details of remote objects are seen less clearly then the ones that are near. Such eye problems as short sight can be compensated with glasses, lenses or by eye surgery.

The causes for short sight can be some of the following eye problems:

Bad inheritanc

Accommodation weakness

Eye overexertion: reading in dark or in moving transport

Birth trauma and cerebral trauma.

Weakness or overstrain of eye muscles

Long sight or in older people a pathology called Presbyopia is in the same group of eye problems but completely the opposite of myopia when the focus forms behind retina. Meaning that it is easier to see objects which are distant and not the ones that are close by. Common causes for long sight are:

Elderly age

Short eye axis

weakened refraction of the cornea

Such eye problems can manifest differently for example long sight at its early stages from +2 to +5 dioptre the eye sight is still in a comparably good condition. Distant objects can bee seen but problems arise if an object is close by. On the other hand if eye sight change is more than +5 dioptre then eye ability to focus fades and it becomes hard to see all of the surroundings.

Conjunctivitis unlike all of the above mentioned illnesses is an inflammatory process of the conjunctiva which protects the cornea and is not connected with ray refraction. Two types of conjunctivitis can be distinguished: severe and chronic. The symptoms for this illness consist in:

Heavy eyelids

burning

lacrimation (epiphora)

photophobia

mucous eye discharge

The causes for such eye problems can be: intensive eye work, contamination of the eye with dirt, chemicals, different microorganisms and etc.

In the end we should mention that eye problems are best treated in the early age, infant eye problems are a little different from adult dysfunctions due to differences in eye anatomy, any eye treatment should be administered after consulting with your health care professional. Be careful and treat your eyes and possible eye problems seriously!
