The word Lasix comes from the word combination “last six”. This refers to an action duration – 6 hours. Lasix is a loop diuretic. It inhibits the Na-K-2Cl symporter located in the loop of Henle’s thick ascending limb. Lasix is a diuretic used in order to eliminate salt and water from the body. The filtered fluid in the end becomes urine. Furosemide works as a blocker of the sodium absorption, water and chloride from the filtered fluids and causes an increase of urine. After taking Lasix orally, the medication begins to act within an hour and diuresis lasts for 6-8 hours. After Furosemide injection, it begins to act after 5minutes and lasts for 2 hours.

Lasix was approved by FDA in July, 1982

Lasix or how it is also called, Furosemide is used in the treatment of congestive heart failure and also edema. Furthermore it can be used in animals  (specially horses) in order to prevent nose bleeding during race.  This fact was discovered accidentally in the early 70s of the previous century. Lasix may also be used for congestive heart failure or edema in horses combined with other drugs. Furosemide must not be used in horses suffering from liver diseases or kidney failure. Overdose of  this drugs may lead to kidney damage, lethargy, coma…

Being also a masking agent for other types of drugs, Lasix is included in the World Anti-Doping Agency.

When combined with corticosteroids and aminoglycoside antibiotics, Furosemide must be taken with caution. Interaction may also be caused with anesthesics. During pregnancy or lactation period the drug is also not recommended, for it is passed through the milk and placenta.

It is forbidden to administer Lasix if a person is not able to urinate.

Like any other kind of medication, before starting using Furosemide, it is necessary to consult your doctor about possible kidney or liver disease, diabetes, gout or possible allergic reactions.

In addition, the patient will have to make a blood test on a regular basis.
