How does Zyrtec work?

The active compound of generic Zyrtec is cetirizine that belongs to selective H1-histamine blockers. By blocking histamine receptors Zyrtec prevents the effects associated with histamine. Histamine is an allergy mediator that is released out of the mast cells when the foreign substances enter the blood circulation. Being in active form histamine causes some changes in the human organism manifested in allergy symptoms.

How generic Zyrtec is taken?

Generic Zyrtec is available in the form of tablets 5mg and 10mg. You may consult your local heath care provider to specify the right dosage for you. Zyrtec dosage regimen is usually based on age, concomitant therapy and other medicines taking. Usually the recommended daily dose for adults and children over 6 years of age is 10 mg daily. In patients with liver and kidney disease the daily dose should be lowered.

Zyrtec precaution and warning!

Generic Zyrtec is contraindicated for patients with severe liver and kidney diseases. Make sure to inform your health care provider if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant or breastfeeding. Generic Zyrtec is a pregnancy category B meaning that it is probably safe to take the medication during pregnancy.
