What is Cetirizine hydrochloride?

Cetirizine is a blocker of the peripheral histamine H1-receptor, antihistamine preparations, hydroxyzine metabolite. Cetirizine hcl inhibits histamine-dependent early phase of an allergic reaction and prevents various physiological and pathophysiological effects caused by histamine such as delation and increased permeability of capillaries (the development of edema, hives, redness), stimulation of sensory nerve endings (itching, pain) and contraction of the smooth muscle of the respiratory and gastrointestinal tract.
At later stage of allergic reaction Cetirizine hydrochloride inhibits the release of histamine and migration of eosinophils and other cells. Cetirizine reduces the expression of adhesion molecules such as ICAM-1 and VCAM-1, which are markers of allergic inflammation, inhibits the activity of other mediators and inducers of histamine secretion such as PAF (platelet-activating factor) and substance P.
Cetirizine hcl significantly reduces hyperreactivity of bronchial tree, occurring in response to the release of histamine in patients with bronchial asthma. These effects are not accompanied by cetirizine central action.
Cetirizine inhibits skin reactions in patients suffering from cold urticaria and dermographism. The medication does not possess  anticholinergic and anti-serotonin action.  The use of cetirizine at therapeutic doses of 10 mg/dailyimproved the quality of life in patients with perennial and seasonal allergic rhinitis.
The indication of high-dose cetirizine (60 mg/daily) revealed no pololong QT interval on ECG. The effects of cetirizine hydrochloride starts in 20 minutes after taking the drug, the maximum antihistaminic effect is achieved after 1 hour.

Cetirizine acts for 24 hours meaining that it is sufficient to take 1 tablet daily to achieve maximal therapeutic effect.

Symptomatic treatment of adults and children older than 5 years of age:

·         Seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis, pollinosis
·         Allergic conjunctivitis
·         Chronic idiopathic urticaria

What is Cetirizine hcl dose?
Cetirizine comes in the form of oral tablets Cetirizine hcl 10mg, and 5mg. Cetirizine oral tablets are taken orally swallowing with sufficient amount of water before or after meal. Try to take the medication at the same time each day. The medication can cause drowsiness in some patients and that is why it is recommended to take in the evening. The recommended dose for adults is 10mg once daily. 

When Cetirizine hydrochloride is contraindicated?

Cetirizine hcl is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity or known allergic reactions to any of the medication ingredients.

Special cautions

Cetirizine is generally well tolerated.
Clinical studies of psychomotor function showed that the frequency of sedative action with cetirizine does not differ from its frequency in patients receiving placebo.
In rare cases cetirizine may cause headache, dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue, dry mouth, excitement, gastrointestinal disorders.

Less common Cetirizine side effects include:  weakness, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, constipation and increased appetite, increased activity of liver transaminases, hemolytic anemia,  thrombocytopenia.

Hypersensitivity reactions in the form of skin reaction and vascular edema are extremely rare.
