Hydrogen sulphide instead of Viagra

Hydrogen sulphide that is released in the cases of eggs spoilage, plays an important role in male erection. Usually hydrogen sulphide is associated with biological breakdown of sulfur-containing compounds. It is also exhaled in the form of automobile emissions.

Clinical investigations showed that small amount of hydrogen sulphide are released into the nerve cells of the penis that control blood flow to the penis. Some scientists consider that this discovery may lead to the development of the new class of erectile dysfunction preparations. These investigations were published in the «Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences» and was based on the experiments carried on the cavernous tissue. The samples of the cavernous tissue were taken in eight men,  which had an transsexual surgery in one clinic in Italy.

''We found that hydrogen sulphide participates in erection of the penis. It was by our investigation''- the professor Giuseppe Cirino from the University from Naples Frederico II.

''Certainty the transmission of hydrogen sulphide represents a new therapeutic way for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. In future our discovery will make possible to develop new preparation that will deliver hydrogen sulphide to the penis or control the release of hydrogen sulphide by the organism itself'' - the professor Cirino specifies.

The effect of hydrogen sulphide is similar to nitrogen oxide. Nitrogen oxide or NO participates in the analogous biochemical process in the cavernous tissue. The release of NO in the nerve ends in the blood vessels of the cavernous tissue  causes blood vessels to relax. This improves blood flow to the penis causing an erection. In this way acts a well known preparation Viagra. Viagra works by inhibiting the enzyme called PDE5 and increases the amount of NO in the cavernous tissue.

Currently nearly 15% of men do not react to Viagra, some can not take Viagra because of application of nitrates, in other people Viagra causes side effects. Professor Cirono consider that new preparations that stimulate the release of hydrogen sulphide will help those patients that are not able to use Viagra.
