Obesity and depression - an endless circle

A meta-analysis conducted by researchers from the Netherlands found between obesity and depression there is a relationship that could lead to a an endless cycle. This meta-analysis included 15 studies with a total number of 59 000 participants. According to the study, people with obesity are in risk of depression by 55% higher, while there is an inverse relationship: patients with depression are at risk of obesity by 58% higher. Further analysis also showed that the relationship between obesity and depression is more expressed for Americans than Europeans. There are several theories explaining the mechanism of the correlation between obesity and depression. First, the ideal of beauty in western society presupposes gracefulness and even emaciation, so obesity causes low self-esteem and complexes which can significant can increase the risk of depression. Secondly, depression may play significant a role in the development of obesity, because it affects the metabolism, the functioning of the endocrine system. In addition, depressed people are prone to overeating as well as a sedentary lifestyle. Some antidepressants like Lexapro, Celexa, Prozac, Zoloft can cause side-effects associated with weight gain. Thirdly, some experts consider obesity as a process associated with inflammation, and inflammation is risk factor for depression as well.
