Generid Aldara (Imiquimod cream 5%) is a potent immune response modifier for topical administration. Therapeutic effect of Adara is associated with activation of body's own immune system. After application on the skin, immune cells are activated by Imiquimod and spread to the damaged skin area. Activated cells start secreting cytokines like interferon and regulate immune response by suppressing viral replication and further cells proliferation.
In case of HPV (human papillomavirus) virus the activated immune cells bind and eliminate cells already infected with HPV.
Immunodeficiency Syndrome caused by HIV virus, genital warts are caused by Human Papillomavirus HPV. Genital warts are common sexually transmitted diseases which is highly contagious.
Imiquimod cream does not possess a direct activity against a viral infection. Imiquad does not belong to chemodestructive or cytotoxi agents. The efficacy of Imiquimod creams makes possible to remove lesions in patients with actinic keratosis and superficial basal cell carcinoma.The exact mechanism of generic Aldara (Imiquimod) in the treatment of actinic keratosis and superficial basal cell carcinoma remains unknown.
Generic Aldara (Imiquimod cream 5%) uses
Imiquimod cream is prescribed to treat the following conditions:
Genital warts (soft, wart-like newgrowths on the skin area and mucus membranes of the male or female genitals. Genital warts are a type of sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused human papillomavirus. Certain types of HPV can result in precancerous changes in the cervix, cervical or anal cancer. These are called high-risk types of HPV.
Actinic ketatosis (skin diseases characterized by rough and small lesions that appear on the skin and that have been exposed to the sunlight over a long period of time. Over many years actinic keratosis may develop in skin cancer)
Superficial basal cell carcinoma (it is one the most common types of skin cancer in humans. It responsable for less than 0.1% of patient deaths due to cancer. Basal cell skin cancer tumors typically occur on sun-exposed skin areas. BCC usually represents flat, firm, pale area that is pink or red, small, pink translucent, shiny, and waxy, and the area may bleed following minor injury.
Mode of administration
Generic Aldara (Imiquimod cream 5%) is used to treat conditions of Actinic Keratosis, superficial Basal Cell Carcinoma, Genital Warts or Perianal Warts.
Imiquimod is available in once-a-day application, for two-five days every week, for a period from 6 to 16 weeks depending on the particular disease treated, severity of the diseases.
Before and after application of Imiquimod cream, patients should wash their hands with soap and water. The treated skin area where generic Aldara creams needs to applied should also be washed with a mild soap and water. It needs to be absolutely dry before Imoquimod cream is applied. Only a thin layer of the cream should be applied to the affected area and rubbed in.
Application of Aldara generic for Actinic Keratosis:
Imiquimod cream should be applied 2 times per week for a full 16 weeks (4 months) to a affected treatment area on the face or scalp. The treatment area is a skin area approximately 25 cm² (e.g., 5 cm x 5 cm) on the face (e.g. forehead or one cheek) or on the scalp. The Examples of 2 times per week application schedules are Monday and Thursday, or Tuesday and Friday. Aldara (imiquimod) Cream should be applied to the entire treatment area and rubbed in until the cream is absorbed. Only one packet of imiquimod cream should be applied to the contiguous treatment area at each application. Aldara (imiquimod) Cream should be applied before normal sleeping hours and left on the affected area for approximately 8 hours. After that time generic Aldara cream should be removed by washing the area with water and mold soap.
It is recommended that patients wash their hands before and after applying Aldara (imiquimod) Cream. Before applying the cream, the patient should wash the treatment area with mild soap and water and allow the area to dry thoroughly (for at least 10 minutes)
Application for Superficial Basal Cell Carcinoma
In the treatment of superficial basal cell carcinoma generic Aldara (imiquimod) Cream should be applied five times per week for a full 6 weeks to a biopsy-confirmed superficial basal cell carcinoma. An example of a 5 times per week application trearment schedule is to apply Aldara (imiquimod) Cream, once per day,Monday through Friday.
Aldara generic (imiquimod 5%) Cream should be applied before sleeping hours and left on the skin for approximately 8 hours. After that time Imiquad cream should be completely removed by washing the area with mild soap and water.
It is recommended that patients wash their hands before and after applying Aldara (imiquimod) Cream. Sufficient imiquimod cream should be applied to cover the treatment area, including 1 centimeter of skin surrounding the tumor.
Applications for External Genital Warts
Aldara (imiquimod) Cream should be applied 3 times weekly to external genital or perianal warts. The treatment with Imiquimod Cream should be continued until the total elimination of the genital ior perianal warts or for a maximum of 16 weeks. Examples of 3 times per week application schedules are: Monday, Wednesday, Friday or Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday.
Geenic Aldara (imiquimod) Cream should be applied prior to before sleeping hours and left on the skin for 6 -10 hours. After that time Imiquad cream should be completely removed by washing the treated area with mild soap and water.

Generic Aldara contraindications and cautions
Imiquimod cream should not be used in the following conditions:
· Hypersensitivity to any of the drugs ingredient
· Pregnancy (Imiquimod is a pregnancy category C)
· Patients with compromised immune system or HIV disease
· Patients under 18 years of age
Imiquimod cream should used only locally. It is not intended to treat internal diseases such as rectal, intraanal HPV infection.
Uncircumcised men using Imiquimod cream who apply the medication under the foreskin need to retract the foreskin and carefully wash the area. Failure to do that may result in painful sensation and scarring.
The medication is intended only for people with healthy immune system.
Imiquimod cream side effects
Generic Aldara cream side effects stated below are mostly appear at the wart area and are mild to moderate. Possible local generic Aldara side effects include:
· Hypopigmentation (changes of skin color)
· Blisters on the skin
· Birning sensation
· Stinging feeling
In rare cases Aldara may cause systemic side effects. Systemic Imiquimod cream include:
· Muscle pain
· Back pain
· Upper respiratory tract infection
· Urinary tract infections
Skin adverse effect like skin color changes, irritation, itching at the site of Imiquimod cream application is frequent in many. This is often due to the immune system responding and goes away with usage.
Aldara generic drug interactions
Do not combined or mix Imiquimod cream with other topical drugs.
